A new season of fashion is here and I have to say it really is my favorite time of year for style. To me spring is the perfect time to wear bright colours and prints in playful ways and refresh your look to reflect what’s happening in the weather. One of my all time favorite spring trends is mixing prints. This trend can be very intimidating and scary so I wanted to share with you my top 3 styling tips for mixing prints this spring. When done well this trend can really open up a whole new world to your style and maximize your wardrobe.
Tip #1 for mixing prints this spring:
I think the best trick to mixing prints is to find a common theme between the prints you are working with. I find this works best with colors and it has been my secret to successful mixed print looks in the past. For example, if one print has a predominantly white background, pair it with another print that has white details. Or, as I have done here in my look, taking this printed shirt from Zara that has a black background and pairing it with a head scarf that has black polka dots. It’s a small detail but it really helps to tie the two prints together.
Tip #2 for mixing prints this spring:
Another great tip to start you off and help grow your confidence with this trend is to have your second printed item be something smaller. You could add some printed shoes, a belt or a head scarf like I did with this adorable scarf from Zara. I am so loving head scarfs right now and think it is such a fun way to add a pop of color or a fun print to liven up your outfit.
Tip #3 for mixing prints this spring:
I love adding in a plainer, simpler piece to tone down the over all look, such as these awesome boyfriend style jeans from GU I bought when I was living in Tokyo last year. I chose a ripped denim pair of jeans for this look because I felt like it made the outfit more casual and relaxed. For all my Aussie’s and anyone living or visiting places that are currently in Autumn, there is no reason you can’t play around with fun prints in the cooler season too. If you want to tone down this look throw on a leather jacket like the one I’m wearing in my weekend style post in a complimentary shade to your print and you are all set to go!
Bonus style tip:
If you are feeling daring, pick out a color from one of the prints and find a lipstick in the same or similar shade. This will really add a pop to your look and tie all elements together. I think of style as being from head to toe, not just clothes and I think the best way to finish off a look is with great complimentary makeup plus I love any excuse to wear amazing lipstick just like this awesome “Arriba! Ultra Matte Lip” from Colourpop.
When mixing prints the options really are endless. So have fun with it. My biggest rule for styling is that there are no rules! So give it a try. What’s the worst that could happen?!
